¡Hola! Somos Santiago y Renata, dos diseñadores chilangos que compartimos una obsesión con las artesanías de nuestro país, por lo tanto decidimos montar una tienda que vendiera el tipo de artesanías que nos gustan: esas que son tan raras que son hermosas, las olvidadas que ven de nuevo la luz y esas huérfanas que junto con otras, forman una familia.
Nos cansamos de que la artesanía se perciba como algo exquisito, caro, perfecto; porque pues… no sólo es así.

México es mucho más que eso: es imperfecto, juguetón, tierno y divertido, como Pingüino :)
 
Y, ¿Por qué se llama Pingüino?
En el dos mil trece durante un viaje a Oaxaca visitamos un mercado y, sin querer, nos enamoramos del mismo objeto: un salero de barro verde en forma de “pájaro” con un taponcito en las pompas. No sabíamos bien qué era, entonces le preguntamos a la artesana y muy segura nos contestó “es un pingüino con sombrero”.

Sin duda es el salerito más tierno del mundo. Y de ahí viene el nombre, de un objeto utilitario, carismático e irónico: como saben, en México no hay pingüinos y como han visto, no usan sombrero.

Created in 2020 by Renata and Santiago —two designers native to Mexico City who share great passion for their country’s handicrafts—, the store showcases pieces for the home that have been carefully selected by the owners of Pingüino. The sole requirement for these objects to become part of the family is that they make them smile.

Together, after researching the region they wish to explore, they travel across Mexican states in search of these pieces: some are replicable and others, unique —but all genuinely Mexican.

The project arises from the need to express their vision of the craftsmanship of their country. They got tired of Mexican crafts being perceived as something exquisite, expensive, perfect —because, well, it is certainly not necessarily the case. Mexico is much more than that: it is imperfect, playful, and tender —just like Pingüino :)
